True Corp Enables Climate Action for its Suppliers to Drive the Telecom-Tech Industry Towards Net Zero by 2050

09 April 2024

Bangkok, April 9, 2024 – As Thailand’s leading telecom-tech company, True Corporation targets carbon neutrality by 2030 and Net Zero emissions by 2050. As part of its environmental action, the company held “True Supplier Forum 2024: Transition to Net Zero” to engage its significant tier-1 suppliers in concerted efforts to reduce emissions in its entire supply chain which closely aligns with the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). This supplier group is one of the three categories with the highest proportion of indirect greenhouse gas emissions (known as Scope 3). True Corporation has been collaborating with a diverse array of supplier partners. In 2023 alone, the company engaged with a total of 1,450 business partners, each of whom successfully completed a comprehensive ESG self-assessment, reflecting their commitment to environmental, social, and governance principles.

Mr. Manat Manavutiveth, Chief Executive Officer, True Corporation Plc said, “During the World Economic Forum in Davos 2024, global warming and the potential of AI technology to address climate change emerged as central topics of discussion, underscoring the urgency for concerted action. True Corporation, Thailand’s leading telecom-tech company, is committed to responsible business practices and recognizes the potential of digital technology and AI to propel environmental sustainability forward. True has been proactively curbing our energy consumption as well as reducing carbon and greenhouse gas emissions, in line with global standards for climate action. However, achieving Carbon Neutral and Net Zero emissions demands a collective effort. Collaboration with suppliers and vendors is paramount, as they play a crucial role in driving positive change and shaping a better world. True stands prepared to provide unwavering support to all our partners in their journey towards the Net Zero goal.”

This collaborative effort is an essential step towards the Net Zero target, complementing the ongoing initiatives to reduce emissions from True Corporation’s own operations, known as Scope 1 and 2. Through network modernization and the utilization of AI and machine learning, True saved a total of 42,000 MWh of electricity in 2023 which represents savings of 197 million baht. In 2024, True is planning to reach a base of solar panels across a total of 11,200 sites and 6 data centers. This initiative is projected to save approximately 64,000 MWh of electricity per year, equivalent to the power needed for thousands of homes for a year and avoiding 28,800 Tons of carbon dioxide equivalent emissions.

A New Platform Innovating for Climate Action

To facilitate suppliers’ efforts to reduce their emissions in accordance with the SBTi, CP Group and True Corporation have developed the “Green House Gas Emissions Data Platform and Consulting Service,” a platform empowering True’s supplier alliance in achieving their Net Zero goals. Key features include:

• Data Collection: The system gathers data on greenhouse gas emissions from various sources including Scope 1, 2 and 3 activities, encompassing fuel consumption, mobile combustion, renewable energy, HFCs and refrigerant leakage, other leakages and purchased energy.

• Data Validation and Reporting: By inputting information regarding emissions sources, the platform automatically calculates emission quantities and generates reports in align with the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI).

True’s supplier alliance can access this platform for free until the end of December 2024. It reflects the company’s wider commitment to sustainability. True Corporation has been ranked world’s number one most sustainable telecom company in the world by the S&P Global’s Corporate Sustainability Assessment and listed in the Dow Jones Sustainability Indices 2023 for six consecutive years.
