True Not at Fault in Rama 9 Call Center Case as SIMs Were Unregistered and Inactive

28 December 2024

Regarding to the news report over the arrest made by the Technology Crime Suppression Division (TCSD), the Immigration Bureau of the Royal Thai Police, and Huai Khwang Police at a condominium in the Rama 9 area, which uncovered 286 SIM boxes and 300,000 SIM cards on December 20, 2024, True Corporation would like to clarify as follows:

Gradual SIM Purchases and Status

The SIM cards found in the operation were obtained through a widespread procurement process from numerous small-scale retailers, rather than being purchased in bulk from a single distributor. Moreover, all the SIM cards were unregistered and inactive at the time of the incident. True Corporation is cooperating with law enforcement to investigate and scan the SIM cards to trace their origin. Preliminary findings from the investigation suggest that a majority of the SIM cards seized originated from abroad, and no connections have been identified with True Corporation’s authorized distribution channels.

Proactive Measures and Legal Compliance

As a licensed telecommunications operator, True Grouphas consistently adhered to applicable laws and regulations and adapted its procedures to counter evolving fraudulent activities. Since the beginning of this year, True Group has enhanced its SIM card registration protocols by incorporating AI technology to make the registration process more systematic. True Group has terminated multiple partnerships with entities exhibiting suspicious activities, preventing potential misuse of SIM cards for fraudulent purposes. Additionally, SIM cards and numbers suspected of being used for scams, such as free-distribution SIMs or low-cost resale SIMs, have been deactivated. A specialized Fraud Management team has been established to enhance the monitoring and prevention of fraudulent activities effectively.

Collaboration with Authorities

True Corporation is fully committed to supporting government agencies, including the Royal Thai Police, the Central Investigation Bureau, and regulatory bodies. The company provides information and operational support for investigations or upon request from authorities. Regarding the misuse of SIM box technology for remote calls from abroad disguised as local numbers for scams, True Corporation promptly reports suspicious activity to law enforcement and related agencies for further action, with numerous cases already reported.

Furthermore, True Corporation has developed the “True CyberSafe” service to enhance cybersecurity and demonstrate its social responsibility in the digital age.
