Anywheel and dtac Business IoT bring greener, smarter bike sharing to Chiang Mai

08 October 2020

8 October 2020 – Anywheel, Singapore’s largest short distance public mobility service provider, has chosen dtac Business’s IoT solutions to power its ecofriendly bike sharing in Chiang Mai. Green, connected and efficient, the service supports the public transportation dimension of the 2019 Chiang Mai City development strategy aspiration of becoming a smart city and the Thailand 4.0 goals. Cycling also supports efficient social distancing for locals and tourists alike in the COVID-19 era.

Anywheel was founded by its current CEO, Htay Aung. The company has been offering bike share services for more than three years in Singapore, Malaysia, and most recently in Thailand. Its goal is to provide a fun, affordable, and environmentally-friendly transport alternative. To do this, Anywheel works with both public and private entities – with no investment required – to install bike docking stations, equipped with bikes that are durable and easy-to-use.

dtac Business supported Anywheel from prototype development, testing, through shipment of the first 1,000 IoT SIMs for installation onsite. dtac Business IoT SIMs enable accurate vehicle fleet management with real-time positioning of all bicycles. The accrued data on vehicle usage can contribute to developing a seamless public mobility network befitting Chiang Mai’s smart city ambitions.

Mr.Rui Jie Seet, General Manager of Anywheel Singapore said, “Anywheel kicked off its Thailand operation in Chiang Mai’s city center and now has about 150 docking stations already installed and more than 6,000 users per day. The company also installed another 150 docking stations at Chiang Mai University and plans to expand its services to other university campuses and industrial complexes. I really hope that in the post-COVID era, locals and tourists will want to enjoy cycling and the scenery of Chiang Mai during the cool months. We know every year from January to March the air quality worsens, but I hope we can help improve the situation here.”

Mr.Thanat Manunyapatr, Head of Sales & Channel Performance, Total Access Communication PCL or dtac, said, “The role of IoT is growing in today’s sharing economy. dtac IoT Business are experts in multi-connected devices including system integrators and solution providers. Combined with our Managed IoT cloud platform and Telenor’s IoT connected SIM on 4G network, the dtac platform is highly secure and efficient.”

The Anywheel service is simple to use: download and open Anywheel app, locate the nearest bicycle parking from its built-in map, scan QR code on the bike to unlock it. The base fare is 10 Baht, while a monthly pass starts at 200 Baht. The app is available on iOS: apple.co/3efwO23 and Android: bit.ly/2ZbO2ZU

Anywheel also plans to develop their app to even better suit urban needs with electric scooter services which are would better serve longer journeys for Thai users. Currently, the electric scooters are only available in Singapore and Malaysia.

“COVID-19 will accelerate IoT investment, particularly if it supports social distancing and work-from-home. We foresee more IoT-equipped bicycles, electric scooters or even gardening tools that can be made available for hire. The new business models will create new revenue channels, expanding products’ lifecycle in line with growing interest in a sustainable, circular economy,” said Mr. Thanat.
